New hotels open coast to coast

There may be a recession but that doesn’t seem to downsize down the number of new hotel openings across the US. This is just a selection.

In Las Vegas, CityCenter - between Bellagio and Monte Carlo resorts - the 57-storey all-suite Vdara will open on October 1 with 1,495 suites and nightly rates from $159. Amenities will include the 16,000 sq.ft. Vdara Health & Beauty, the two-level wellness spa, salon and fitness complex. www.Vdara.com

Room/suite rates in the ARIA Resort & Casino opening on December 16 range from $179. The soaring 4,004-room steel and glass building will be the centerpiece of CityCenter. www.AriaLasVegas.com

In Hawaii and following a complete renovation, 592-room The Royal Hawaiian features 35 suites, more than 66,000 square feet of beachfront space and the world famous Mai Tai bar. www.luxurycollection.com/hawaii

Also in Hawaii, the Wyland Waikiki Resort & Spa is to be converted into 404-room Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach opening in the middle of this year. www.marriott.com

Kimpton Hotels has opened the 107-room/suite $50 million Lorien Hotel & Spa in the heart of Old Town Alexandria near Washington, DC with room rates from £230, and special weekend rates available. www.lorienhotelandspa.com and www.kimptonhotels.com

On the opposite coast, the 123-room/suite Rosewood Sand Hill is the new ultra-luxury hotel and spa, located just one mile west of the Stanford University campus 35 miles south of San Francisco. It includes a 17,000-square-foot Sense Spa and signature destination restaurant, Madera.

InterContinental Hotels Group’s five-storey, 292-room Crowne Plaza New Orleans-Airport just a mile from the airport has undergone a $28 million renovation and conversion from a former Holiday Inn Select. www.crowneplaza.com

Another IHG airport hotel has opened seven miles Milwaukee Airport and just minutes from downtown Milwaukee. The 118-room Staybridge Suites Milwaukee Airport South is the area's first Staybridge Suites hotel, to be followed later this year by two more properties, in downtown Milwaukee and Oconomowoc. www.staybridge.com
